Difficulties of Teaching ESL to Children

We understand that this skill gradually disappears as a young child grows, and that kids learn new languages effortlessly. It’s not there anymore by the time an adult starts understanding a new language. Kids who don’t reside in the language environment discover it at school. As the method of studying his first language, what are the steps to make this process for a young child as effective as their first language? Looking into how a kid starts to understand his first language might help see how “some of the magic of childhood” could be utilized to make understanding of the foreign language more gratifying and more productive.

When picking an ESL training plan for young kids it is necessary to realize that the actual act of being able to understand a language is split into two elements: the first component with this process handles how the new language involves the learner, and the 2nd part – how the learner involves the new language. Consequently an effective ESL training plan should preferably allow us to create an atmosphere in course that would provide the language to kids and would enable them to begin understanding the international language as normally as possible.

ESL Teaching and Letterland
When I discovered the Letterland notion, I was inspired by it in 1997 to begin my own type of lerning environment for ESL teaching to young kids in Irkutsk, which is in Russian for those who may not know. I felt my own daughter was observed by me to be developing a keen interest in English by playing with Letterland resources since she was two years old, this concept could become the building blocks for building an effective ESL training plan.

Pictograms are used by letterland (alphabet – shaped picture – characters) for each English sound and for sounds represented with a mixture of alphabet letters. This pictogram approach appeals for these reasons:

  • The amount of pictogram characters is restricted (memory-friendly).
  • Each narrative builds on prior knowledge (orderly).
  • The basics are covered by the method and significantly beyond (methodical).

However, Letterland is not just used to instruct kids in how to read. It blends a structured phonics method with entire language training and at once it is founded on a child’s main interest — perform. On one stage, kids will first perceive Letterland as just enjoyable, but underneath the surface, there’s a structured and systematic program for building:

  • Listening and talking skills
  • Phonic skills
  • Complete word recognition
  • Studying for meaning
  • Early creative writing

The resources of Letterland were created for native-speaking children of English, but we’ve observed they adapt readily to teaching ESL in Russia, helping adults to learn English in New Jersey, and pretty much anywhere else. A significant distinction is that with ESL kids, capability to decode the appears of English phrases is frequently in front of their ability to comprehend the “significance” of these phrases. Our Russian students frequently know pronunciations of words before meanings. We continue to instruct them on meanings by conventional approaches including photo and translation cards and simultaneously maintain communicative strategy. The pictogram characters tend to give lots to teachers of possibilities to use useful English in speaking with kids, and dialogue – based teaching offers for extending their grammar and vocabulary.

All learning methods are essential at an English school West Palm Beach based location (and pretty much anywhere else, for that matter), but the one connected to constructing learner’s confidence, is worth to be viewed one of the main: “A learner without confidence is in big trouble from the very start, but one who actually has the confidence that comes along with achievement, even if the achievement is restricted, can conquer a number of other learning difficulties. With Letterland strategy, success is experienced by each lesson the children in creating sense of the unknown, and a solid foundation is built by this for the success in further ESL learning.

The Letterland notion helps to produce an ESL learning atmosphere that’s much like a child’s natural learning atmosphere. We’ve also discovered that Letterland approaches are very much consistent with a child’s natural language understanding methods. This makes us, at Uceda School, to think that this is a reason why the approach has been so effective and why it will be recommended for ESL teaching of small children.

Our teachers are very excited, enthusiastic and benefit from this program. We discovered they found the theory extremely helpful personally. Most of them have remarked that now they also understand better why particular letters act in certain methods and, consequently, are in a much better place to train ESL to their courses. What’s also quite satisfying for the employees is the fact that the children’s interest is producing training so much simpler and so much more pleasing.
