The Bilinguals of the World

Just how many individuals are bilingual nowadays? Any thoughts? What about just those within the US? The USA now includes about 20% bilinguals based on the U.S.’s Department of Education.

The focus of bilingual speakers of particular languages could be divided by place of residence in most cases. The amount of bilingual children within America is climbing… which is a wonderful thing should you ask me! Bilingualism keeps growing in America, nevertheless, but personally I think we must break it down much more.

To begin with, we must determine what it is that “bilingual” really means. That, as simple as it seems, is extremely challenging. “You begin with something similar to “someone who is able to speak two languages.” Reasonable enough? Sure.

What exactly does this mean to be able to communicate in two languages? I am capable of saying Hi in about 8. I am able to spell hello in perhaps 5? I’m native to English, speak Spanish at a fairly eloquent level, and am a high beginner or low intermediate in German. Am I trilingual? Bilingual? Does it really matter what we call it?

The purpose is, bi-lingual is difficult to determine because language is difficult to define. It is simpler to discover the advantages of being bilingual compared to the real description of it… go figure.

That addresses the US, but now how about the planet? Many nations exist where bilingualism is the standard instead of the rule. Just how many individuals are bilingual in Asian nations? European nations? In India, for instance, kids regularly develop several language skills. This is quite ordinary for them. Singapore is just another nation where this practice is entirely common; English normally being among the languages they first learn. It appears that other states do a lot a lot more to encourage bilingual education while raising bilingual children compared to the USA. This is often understood better by knowing that the most common second-language on earth is English.

Over half the planet’s seven billion people communicate in GREATER than one language (bilingual/trilingual/pollyglot) and about 25% of the planet’s nations have two official languages.

English may be the language of commerce, company, travel, and Hollywood. This means that everybody else must learn English. Lucky for all of us! While we might not have drilled down just how many individuals are bilingual, we’ve definitely proven that it’s more prevalent outside the US.

Our aim at here at Uceda School is to train individuals on bilingualism and helping people to understand English as a second language.
